Username restrictions

Hi there,

i just discovered vikunja and installed it on a yunohost instance.
And already i have a suggestion - username restrictions.

I got the “invalid data” message when i wanted to try with the username i use in my yunohost installation for all apps - firstname.lastname

Problem seems to be the “.” - the full stop/period symbol in the username. Changin or leavin that makes registration possible.

But it is a bit annoying as i’d prefer a consistend username all over my “personal cloud”

Why is this restriction and is it possible to allow common special characters like the “.”
e.g. a “_” is no problem.

The restriction exists because the username must not look like a URL.

Would it be possible to make the . restriction configurable for self-hosted instances? That would keep the current default while allowing admins to use more common formats like firstname.lastname.

That makes sense from a URL-parsing perspective. I was mainly wondering whether there could be an exception for a dot when it’s used in a normal firstname.lastname format, since that’s a common username convention.

That makes sense. I agree that keeping the username rules simple is probably the safest approach.
