Maybe this could be a solution to the problem described here:

Multiple subtasks

We had a similar discussion somewhere before - the biggest problem was how this should behave with long tasks (or a lot of them). In these cases it gets too crowded too quickly. The most straightforward way to achieve this is would be a configuration option for the level of tasks to be shown. Do you think that would be a good solution?
